Information on graduate incomes is sourced from graduates’ taxation returns, based on records collected to administer the Higher Education Loan Program (HELP). This dataset has been constructed by the Department of Education, Skills and Employment (DESE) in collaboration with the Australian Taxation Office (ATO) and the Australian Government Actuary (AGA). Use of administrative data can provide more detailed information than is obtainable through surveys, and graduate incomes can be monitored longitudinally.
Graduate income data on the
ComparED website is now based on taxation records, replacing previous survey-based information. Results refer to the median total income reported for a single financial year, for domestic coursework graduates who completed their studies one, five and nine years previously. Note these are incomes reported by all graduates, not just those who were employed.
On the QILT website, a more detailed dataset is available for download. Results are published for the values at the 25th percentile, median and 75th percentile of the distribution. Results are published for provider totals, providers disaggregated into 21 study areas and providers disaggregated into 73 study areas. The 21 study areas match those used throughout the QILT program and the ComparED website, which are then further disaggregated into 73 study areas.
The most recent results available are from taxation records for the 2017-18 financial year. For further information, please see the analytical reports which accompany the 2017-18 dataset.
